Synopsis:
Venice, June 24th 1973. Over 200.000 people await the speech of Enrico Berlinguer, general secretary of the Italian Communist Party. It's the largest demonstration ever organized by any Venetian left-wing party. The culmination of the most peculiar Festival Nazionale de "l'Unità" ever organized. Through photographs, documents, archive materials and interviews to the protagonists of this event, the documentary attempts to reconstruct the history of this forgotten festival. A journey into a Venice that no longer exists, made of politics, debates, popular culture, intellectuals, art, students and workers. In 1973, the foundations were laid for a change that would involve not only the Venetian communists, but the entire country. Another world seems possible.

Synopsis:
Filmmaker Víctor Arregui explores a traumatic event he experienced in his youth, when he was a leftist political activist in Ecuador in 1987. As if they were two currents that converge in the same narrative thread, the documentary gaze of Isabel Dávalos, who invites him to speak, first in front of the camera and then in front of his militant friends and his children, is linked to the gaze of Víctor himself, who stages, in an exercise of catharsis, the episode that marked him. The films that Victor has written and filmed in the past, also appear as traces of his silence. The authoritarianism embodied in male bodies that obey the social mandate of virility, with all the taboos it entails, is just one of the themes that this brave, precise and heartbreaking film brings to the stage.

Synopsis:
Cheers to Iranian Women portrays the lives, struggles and political and social activism of six influential Iranian women activists, now living in exile. The film challenges the dominant patriarchal and misogynistic portrayals of Iranian women, primarily in Iran’s official cinema, but also the postmodernist and cultural-relativist representations prevalent in many mainstream films in the West. The film explores women's bodies, voice, dance, music and use of colour through cinematic forms and devices that allow an actually existing, empowered image of the Iranian women to emerge.

Synopsis:
On September 14, 2022, UN secretary-general, António Guterres, told world leaders gathered in New York: “The fossil fuel industry is killing us, and leaders are out of step with their people, who are crying out for urgent climate action.” TD Bank is the 8th worst bank in the United States when it comes to funding climate destruction; the worst banks are Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi, and Bank of America. We chose to protest TD Bank, “America’s Most Convenient Bank®,” because it was most convenient. This film shows ordinary people acting locally by taking to the streets of New Haven to demand that TD Bank stop funding fossil fuels. The climate crisis is an ongoing existential threat; the people’s efforts to fight climate catastrophe deserve recognition. I hope this film will inspire more people to join protests and express outrage.

Synopsis:
In Fear Death by Water, we enter the world of Dead Stirnerman and Solid Mercury who run an artist's television programme. Gravely affected by economic, cultural, and ecological crisis, the state makes a grand survey of what work is most essential to see what should be forbidden, and artists are found to be bottom of the pile in public opinion. When Solid Mercury pivots towards ecology in order to secure financial support for exploiting former office workers as farming interns, she soon discovers that achieving a bountiful harvest is more difficult than it seems and begins scheming to escape her predicament.
Presuming a connection between magic and nature, Dead Stirnerman and Solid Mercury invite Arsenal Magus, Amsterdam's most famous art witch, to appear on their show with the aim of deceiving her in to helping them cheat their way to a harvest that will satisfy their commitments. However, when their ill intent causes the rituals to go awry will it be the hosts of the show, their guest, or their overexploited interns who ultimately pay the price for messing with cosmic forces?
Continuing the themes of Leslie Lawrence and Sophia Simensky's 'The Fire Sermon', this short film addresses the idea of 'essential' work and its relation to the economic effects of the global pandemic and climate change, focusing on the disconnect between economic hierarchy and sensible social ecology.

A young boy comes to the Friendship Settlement, where the Soviet builders of the Palace of Culture and Science lived in the 1950s, in search of accommodation for his grandparents from Ukraine. Here he meets a girl singing in the choir, who becomes his guide. Seemingly, it is a story about love that cannot happen because of the war in Ukraine, but more deeply it is a story about finding your identity.
Music is an integral part of the film. It is not only the background of the events narrated in the film, but its equal protagonist.

Three dysfunctional yet potentially effective Revolutionaries are drawn by presumably their own secret informers in 1907 New Mexico to an overlook through which a train overloaded with gold stolen from the people and slaves by powerful business moguls will pass. They plan to rob the gold to fund their OWN revolutions and liberate the captives. They are…a failed Bolshevik from Russia seeking to redeem himself from his own failures in the 1905 revolution back home, a feminist who wants to arm women against men to take over America, and a Mexican Yaqui Indian who wants to throw all White people out of North America. Shifting alliances abound, secrets revealed when those holding them do not want them known, and are most vulnerable. Such are catalyzed by the failed Bolshevik’s slow-witted, ‘refuses to be liberated’ servant. 60 min. Based on published novel of same title.

Synopsis:
The film is a political and personal contribution to the topic of migration and asylum, at the centre of which we find Mimmo Lucano, the former mayor of the municipality of Riace. The Riace integration model was seen as a territorially limited phenomenon in its initial years and was therefore not a focal issue for the restrictive Italian and European immigration policy. From 2015 onwards, Riace began to attract growing international attention, as it was regarded as an effective system for the integration of refugees and migrants that could and should be copied and imported. In the year 2017, the Italian judicial system took legal action against Mimmo Lucano because of a number of purported serious violations in connection with his activities in office and in the management of projects in the municipality of Riace. If the preliminary judgement ultimately us confirmed this summer in the appeal proceedings, Mimmo Lucano will go to prison. The regional court in Locri sentenced him in the first instance to a prison term of thirteen years and two months as well as a compensation payment of five hundred thousand euros. The charges and the extent of the punishment meted out have led to severe criticism among those in the political arena, in the public opinion, and even among legal experts, as well as intellectuals who are particularly sensitive to and informed about the issue the law and integration. Costantino Ciervo has known Mimmo Lucano since 2013, and they both share the same world outlook and ethical understanding. Ciervo also very much understands the way Lucano does politics. The film is structured into ten chapters. By switching between landscape images, dialogues, poetic texts by Marco Mantello and Erri De Luca, all underscored by background music, Ciervo highlights the contrast between two contrary – conceived of and practiced – models of human coexistence. On the one hand there is the model of a selective culture that aims to be a consumption-oriented society in which people are only interested in defence, drawing lines in the sand, ethnic purity as well as technical and economic functionality; on the other hand there is an open model in which people attempt with great effort to (re-)create an open-minded, communicative, supportive as well as ecologically and humanly sustainable society in everyday life. The final chapter of the film, in which the story of “Ciccio, Rosa and Toni” is told by Mimmo Lucano with a moving simplicity, is of particular importance. It expresses the aim of his human and political actions, that is, to help those who get left behind by society. The narrative journey ends in a final sequence that moves from an apparent pessimism to an “optimism of the conscience” – the concrete and irrevocable goal to revive the region condemned to being abandoned.

Synopsis:
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas — until now. When Ruby Duncan loses her Las Vegas hotel job due to a workplace accident and accepts public assistance, she discovers firsthand the stigma and harassment by an over-zealous, fraud-obsessed welfare department. With Mary Wesley and Alversa Beals, Ruby creates a welfare rights group to fight for an adequate income, dignity, and justice. They, along with low-income mothers across the country, form the National Welfare Rights Organization (NWRO) with the support of George Wiley, a chemistry professor-turned-activist and Frances Fox Piven, a radical social-scientist. Together, the mothers of the NWRO introduce a Universal Basic Income campaign with feminist Gloria Steinem at their side, at the Democratic National Convention in Miami in 1972.
STORMING CAESARS PALACE shares the story of how a group of ordinary low-income mothers launched an extraordinary grassroots movement for economic justice and Black women’s empowerment in the 1960s and 1970s. This film reveals the roots of today’s movements, highlighting the experiences of Black women organizers from one of the most challenging and forgotten feminist, anti-poverty movements in our history, and places it in the limelight, where it will inspire, embolden and honor the women whose courage, tenacity and dreams could not be quashed, against all odds.

Synopsis:
The Man Who Was Thursday (2021) is a collaborative film that uses context of shared art production to produce an additional fantasy narrative about a wild anarchist plot to destroy the world. Under the cover of ‘art practice’, an esoteric cabal publicly flaunts their dangerous activity while moving forward with a deadly plan. At the heart of their scheme is a mysterious briefcase that one undercover operative must find before the mysterious figure known only as ‘Sunday’ has the chance to use it.
Based on G.K. Chesterton’s reactionary early 20th century novella, and echoing contemporary conservative fears about a nebulous conspiracy of ‘Antifa’ activists, the film imagines what it would look like if the postmodern values of ‘bohemian’ artists really did turn them into enemies of the state.
An experimental art project, the film is made in a collaborative style, incorporating a series of encounters with other artists that were progressively worked into the edit from 2019 - 2021.

Synopsis:
During the Liberation War from Nazi-Fascism, spanning from September 3, 1943, to May 2, 1945, following the Cassibile armistice between Italy and the Allied forces until the surrender of German troops in the Italian theater of war, approximately 11,400 Italian military personnel, 44,720 partisans, and 9,180 civilians, including children, women, and men, were killed by the retreating German armed forces. This virtual installation serves as a symbolic and digital memorial for the Italian victims of Nazi-Fascist reprisals, who have yet to receive proper justice, particularly from the German side. This lack of justice stems from the failure to acknowledge Italian court verdicts beyond the Alps, denying both criminals due process and victims full human justice.
The memorial metaphorically and digitally reimagines Berlin's "Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe," incorporating various Italian landscapes devastated by war, including mountains, valleys, and urban areas, reminiscent of the Apuan Alps. The sky, once vibrant, now reflects a reddish glow, symbolizing the violence of war. Through an interactive electronic timeline, visitors can explore the atrocities committed against Italian civilians, province by province, using smartphones, tablets, or PCs. Motion sensors guide visitors through the desolate landscape, marked by gravestones and plaques of massacres.
The once green mountains now appear as scorched earth, a testament to the devastation wrought by conflict. Against a sky devoid of its usual brightness, symbols like the "Ro-Ber-To" and "Schwarze Sonne" evoke the darkness of war. Amidst this bleakness, the hope of resistance and renewal persists, embodied by references to General Winter and the eventual return of spring.
The cowardly attempts by invaders to justify their brutality with propaganda slogans like "gang fight" are condemned, as they sought to terrorize the population and enforce racial ideologies. Collaborators, including former fascists, aided in these atrocities, leading to massacres like Sant'Anna di Stazzema. The memorial stands as a rebuke to these atrocities, challenging the audacity of the real perpetrators to label others as bandits.
They used to write 'Achtung! Banditen!' on walls, marking targeted village houses in flagrant disregard for criminal and international law norms. This act served the sole purpose of terrorizing the population and seeking revenge for what the German side perceived as a betrayal. It was driven by the deadly logic of race ideology, aiming to secure living space for the believed Aryan race and to eradicate everything deemed non-Germanic.
Despite the passage of time, disbelief and indignation remain at the forefront, particularly in the face of denialism. This denialism, fueled by the banality of evil, seeks to distort historical truths and perpetuate the horrors of Nazifascism.

The film project “Homecoming of the Asparagus Cutters”, which consists of 12 different images, leads through metaphorical, surreal and black humor-oriented worlds of association. In parts explicit, when Günter Schabowski quotes the opening of the wall at the grill or champagne socialists wait for the never-coming bus, as in Bekett's “Waiting for Godot”, in parts surreal, when the Loreley splashes in the whirlpool or a lobster in a church ruin from Neue Femininity World is brought. In “The Homecoming of the Asparagus Cutters” the unconscious, the dreamlike emerges from the shadows into the light and unfolds an emotional image of a turning generation that wants to forget a lot and mourns others.

Synopsis:
In his film "Heimatkunde" (The lasting formation), the director returns to the school building of his childhood. For almost 25 years it lay empty, seemingly waiting to be revived. The remains of socialist education are pasted over, hidden, forgotten.
In tentative interviews with contemporary witnesses we are gradually coming nearer to the systematic manipulation of the child's mind. In this way, it becomes understandable how the dictatorship functioned and turned into the commonplace "that's just the way it is", which still exists today and thwarts any criticism of and debate about history.
However, overcoming the German "duality" remains impossible without looking back and reappraising this form of education that generated the authoritarian mind.

Synopsis:
Located in Berlin and framed by a personal voiced address to the revolutionary Marxist Rosa Luxemburg, the film brings the largely silenced stories of ordinary individuals who resisted fascism during the Third Reich, often at the cost of their own lives, into the present. In contrast to large state memorials to the victims of the Holocaust many of the individual resisters to the Nazis are memorialised by Stolpersteine, small stumbling blocks in the pavements outside the buildings where they lived. Their stories are put in conversation with contemporary resistance against the right-wing nationalist party AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) through the activities of the Berlin branch of the group Omas Gegen Rechts (Grandmothers Against the Right).

Synopsis:
Since the beginning of the UN climate conferences in 1992, annual CO2 emissions have not decreased, but increased by 60%. Why? What could a society look like that would be able to curb climate change?
In the climate movement, there is a growing realisation that capitalism and climate protection are incompatible, but there is no idea of how we can bring about a change in the system. The Loud Spring outlines what the profound change that we need might look like.
In a situation where public awareness of the drastic consequences of climate change is growing rapidly, the film draws attention to the elephant in the room: where does the political power to actually change things come from?
In THE LOUD SPRING, director and producer Johanna Schellhagen asks what needs to be done to curb barbarism, chaos and mass hunger in the unfolding climate catastrophe. The film was realised by labournet.tv.
On the visual level, THE LOUD SPRING works with an exciting style mix of documentary footage and animation. The latter are penned by the successful "graphic novel" artist Lee Lai.

This video essay focuses on the landscapes of the Sonoran Desert—and the project of a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico—as a way of investigating the manner in which something as seemingly generic as a wall can take on particular political and affective forms. This short provocation explores the ways that violent and distasteful objects create, and subsequently come to characterize, malevolent spectacles.

The Albanian cinema of the 1950-1990s has played a significant role in forming the collective historical memory of those who watched it. Gllava’s film shines a light on the heritage, hidden meanings and visual beauty of the Albanian cinema of the 1950-1990s, this mysterious and largely unknown subject from Albania’s Communist regime, one of the most securely closed-off regimes in Eastern Europe, comparable only to today’s North Korea.
What we are looking at is the dreams and hopes of the Albanians through films from that era in the context of the significant influence from the Soviet propaganda machine and the classic tradition of the European and especially Italian and French cinema.

Synopsis:
The documentary opens with a tribute to Pasolini and his Comizi D’amore (1965). The authors start from that brief homage and take us on a new journey, more intimate and less political, to investigate love in its various forms. It is the feeling par excellence, but also the most unfathomable, to the point that a single voice is not enough to describe it. Amori collects the testimonies of needs, detachments, losses, compromises, explorations, purity, tenacity, salvation and consolation. A documentary about love, but, above all, about those who love. A small open window on a vast and often superficially addressed topic. As the authors themselves write, it is "a small film stirring among sharks in the open sea".

In a near future, society has become divided into two clearly differentiated and demarcated blocks within each one of the cities and towns all over the world: the rich neighbourhood and the poor neighbourhood. Carmen is a teenager who lives with her father in an old house of the poor area. The Father, due to an accident, can no longer walk, which he tries to conceal from the rest of the people, as he thinks that, if it became known, everybody would regard his daughter as unprotected. It is therefore Carmen who leaves home every day to find work and/or something to eat. Both when she leaves and when she returns, Carmen holds conversations with Cloti, the impoverished old woman who lives on the square in front of her house. Cloti helps Carmen as much as she can and gives her the same advice as her father: “Don’t ever go to the rich neighbourhood.” Former friends of the father discover his State of disability and threaten the daughter. The father faces the two men with deadly consequences that are to irreversibly change Carmen’s already precarious, miserable life.

Synopsis:
Franco Fortini was one of the most important voices of the 20th century.
Poet, essayist, literary critic, translator and teacher, he had a great influence on the generations and movements of '68, especially among young people. An independent voice, a highly critical spirit, animated by an ethical and moral strenght with few precedents, always striving to find 'truths'. Today his name is almost forgotten, just as many of the ideals for which he fought and lived seem to have faded. The documentary traces Fortini's poetic, political and human formation, recovering from the "rubble of the past" what can still be precious for our present and useful for our future. This is not just a personal project, it is the result of a series of experiences and encounters, the fruit of many voices coming together to create a collective image of Franco Fortini. This film was made thanks to the support of 225 crowdfunders and has been developed with the collaboration of the Fortini's Archive in Siena.

Synopsis:
In the square of Trocadero, em Paris, a video-art GÉNOCIDE appears as a potent form of resistance.
In the memory of all the victims of the Brazilian genocide.
Brazil dies a little more each day when its people are cut short by the pandemic, it is the second most affected country, with a real number of victims ten times more than announced. Great part of its precarious and exploited population is once again sacrificed at the altar of profits by an insatiable minority, willing to endorse all forms of crime in order to preserve their privileges.
Brazil dies a little more everyday when its fragile democracy is attacked by a gang of mobsters, who arrived in the presidency through rigged elections, and implicitly authorize all forms of racist and homophobic violence against opposing politicians, environmentalists, native peoples and media professionals. They encourage the destruction of forests and natural reservations, delivered by the unlimited appetite of agrobusiness giants and unscrupulous exploiters.
With Brazil a bit of the beauty of the world, of human and environmental diversity and magic are attacked every day. Under the deafening silence of democracies, in particular of European countries, that pretend that nothing serious is happening, they continue their business with a cynical and mortal government, which overrides all principles.
However, another Brazil is still possible.

Synopsis:
Argentina's social movements generate viable alternatives of economies and human relations within a crisis-ridden, exploitative, neoliberal and neo-colonial economic system.
RePresente is a documentary that seeks to open a space for voices, explanations, anecdotes but also images and dynamics of a world that does not stop to inspire us - a world that provides us with new inputs for debate, criticism and creation. The protagonists of this story are members of social movements and organizations who carried out the struggles during the last years and keep on building viable alternatives to the crisis-ridden system on a daily basis.
It also points out the structural reasons for the severe situation in Argentina after four years of explicit neoliberalism and examines the influence of the International Monetary Fund and the G20 in the region. At the same time, it talks about the hope for a better future, about alternatives generated by movements that act in the field of feminism, self-managed and cooperative economies as well as ecological and community-supported agriculture.
The documentary is a collaboration between German and Argentine alternative media collectives which has its origin in the intense days of December 2018 when the G20 summit took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Synopsis:
Suspensions, Infinite examines the language of propaganda films to create an experimental essay film on vanishing forms of working, cycles of exploitation, and the role of human attention (as a labor form in itself) within surveillance capitalism.
Through a cinematic portrait of a Portuguese family's labor histories from 1900-2002, a continuum is exposed, about life as an immigrant, as a queer person, as almost-working class, and as astute observers of power imbalances within our current means of connection.

Synopsis:
What is the relationship between Manchester in 2017 and the Russian Revolution of 1917? The German philosopher Friedrich Engels, who wrote the Communist Manifesto with Karl Marx, lived for 20 years in the world's first industrial city. Through this founder of communist theory, artist and filmmaker Phil Collins investigates what remains of his ideas in today’s United Kingdom. How would Engels view the world today? And has anything changed for the working poor?
Collins not only brings Engels back "home" metaphorically, but also literally. We follow the journey that a statue of the philosopher makes from a Ukrainian village through Europe and back to Manchester where it was permanently installed as a new public monument. With his visually layered Ceremony, a combination of documentary road movie and social-activist pamphlet, Collins proposes a renewed link between Manchester and the idea of communism as a radical and visionary alternative for the tyranny of capital that keeps a firm grip on our political, economic and emotional lives.

Synopsis:
Death Must Be Earned is the intimate portrait of Serge Livrozet, former safe-cracker, one of the protagonists of 1970s French counter-culture, alongside Michel Foucault founder of the Committee of Prisoner's Action, self-taught writer and anarchist activist. The film portraits him at age 75 in his hometown of Nice where he revisits the pivotal episodes of his life of social struggle and polticial activism.
"The eyes through which Nicolas Drolc sees Serge Livrozet and the eyes through which he invites us to see him are stripped of both othering and compassion. But Nicolas is showing us no circus attraction, but rather a human-being whom he invites us to love alongside him. There is no room for fooling around with useless gimmicks. The portrait he paints is raw and without fanfare or indulgence, steeped in a subjectivity he owns entirely. It is precisely in this rigorous ruggedness that Death must be earned found a unity, a strength and an offbeat poetry."

They had to flee, fight for their lives, resist or go into exile. Our witnesses, Liliana, Joao, Teresa, Hector, Oscar and Alberto saw their lives change dramatically on 11 September 1973. On that day the armed forces of General Pinochet put a brutal end to the Chilean path towards socialism, a project of radical transformation initiated by President Allende and supported by an extraordinary popular movement.
In their moving, dignified and combative accounts, they share their life stories, evoke the difficulties faced in exile and for some, their return to their home country. Their memories are painful but necessary and their legacy a combination of hope and solidarity reminiscent of their fight for a fairer and more egalitarian society.

In 1986, 600 orphans and rural children from Burkina-Faso were sent to Cuba with the mission of learning a trade so they could come back and develop their country, which was undergoing a Revolution. But after the assassination in 1987 of burkinabè President Thomas Sankara, the liquidation of the Revolution by Blaise Compaoré and the end of the Cold War, how were they to return, to build themselves, to exist?
The narrative of this utopia of Red Africa and the epic memories of these children are mixed with the archive images, sometimes reddened by the sand, the heat and the wind, sometimes faded, almost disappearing, thus giving us to see the reminiscences of their revolutionary youth.

L’effetto speciale.
